Self-portrait, warped by the weight of sadness, holding onto a small baby figure, which is a depiction of me. (30inx40in)
References childhood and nostalgia. The idea of knowing you can never return, looking back, wishing you could sit a bit longer without the weight of age. A rather dreary feeling.
This painting began with a digitally warped image created in Photoshop. Initially, I planned to integrate backlighting to display time signatures, but later chose against this element to avoid visual and material clutter. The small doll emerged from my interest in incorporating three-dimensional components; it was hand-carved from wood and painted with acrylic.
During the carving process, I encountered issues with the doll’s flatness and rebuilt dimensionality using layered glue applications. All 3D elements are removable and magnetically attached, allowing for flexibility in display and interaction. The fabric arms were entirely hand-sewn.
